Marriage of Metals has similarities to wood marquetry or stained glass - it involves sawing out simple shapes of different colors of metal (we’ll be using copper, brass, silver, even exotic Japanese alloys) so that they fit together like a puzzle. The puzzle pieces will be soldered together, then filed and sanded until the pattern is clean and flat. Marriage of metals is ideal for simple geometric designs of two-three colors. Once the solder clean-up is done, we will create made-from-scratch brooch (pin) findings. Or you can use your married metal piece to create earrings, a pendant, a box lid, or more! This is a great class for those wanting more experience soldering and filing/finishing, and those who like a clean, geometric look to their work. Use of Japanese alloys and patinas will also be covered. Intermediate/advanced. Advanced students wishing to use this class time for independent study are also welcome.
