Instructor: Anne Wolf. Tuition $240 + $62-$122 kit fee (+tax & shipping or kit available for pick up)
Take your mokume gane patterning to a whole new level - beyond stamping, twisting and chiseling. At a fundamental level, mokume gane patterning is analogous to the geologic processes of uplift, metamorphosis, and erosion. In this newly expanded class, Anne reveals unexpected ways to pattern which she has discovered over the years. With hammers, stamps and other tools we will metamorphosize the blank mokume gane sheet; the patterns will begin to appear as our files erode away the disturbed layers. The focus will be on creating uniquely patterned mokume sheet that can be used later to make jewelry, box lids, and more. Best for students who have taken at least one mokume gane class, or well-equipped and motivated beginners. This online class is designed to work just like an in-person workshop. We’ll be teaching via Zoom and you’re encouraged to work on your piece and ask questions along the way:
- We’ll begin with an interactive presentation and demos and then we’ll break for lunch.
- During lunch, the Zoom meeting stays open so you can either take a break or continue working with your fellow students.
- Anne returns to the Zoom session after lunch, to answer questions. You can work on your own or rejoin the Zoom class to work alongside your fellow students.
- We’ll finish each day with a group wrap up session. On the last day we’ll have our traditional raffle too!
Basic Materials Kit: 2 pieces of copper/brass mokume, steel stamping and forming tools, sanding discs and mandrel, sandpaper and wax. $62

Equipment you will need for the class: Rough files, jeweler’s hand files, small cross-pein hammer, torch for annealing, sturdy forging surface, planishing hammer, wooden dapping block or sandbag, large inexpensive ball pein hammer. Optional: rolling mill, pattern plates or other rolling mill textures, stamp tools.
Safety First! We urge you to wear closed-toed shoes wherever you are working, loose hair must be pulled back and safety glasses and ear protection are always in style. Depending on your skill level, final fabrication and finishing may be needed after the class to complete the project. We offer ongoing independent study opportunities for this purpose.
